Sri Lanka's ex-first lady arrested over alleged misuse of children's hospital donations

Friday, October 9, 2026 - Sri Lanka’s former first lady, Shiranthi Rajapaksa, has been arrested over allegations that a charity linked to her misused donations intended to purchase medical equipment for a children’s hospital.

The 73-year-old wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was arrested on October 7, 2026, as anti-corruption authorities intensified investigations into the case. The funds reportedly amounted to 10 million Sri Lankan rupees, approximately $30,300, and were intended to support Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo.

Investigators allege that the donations collected through the Siriliya Saviya charity were not used for their intended purpose, with questions emerging over whether the hospital equipment had already been provided through another source. Rajapaksa has denied wrongdoing, maintaining that the money was not misappropriated.

The investigation has also involved a former head of a state-owned bank who allegedly released the funds without following the required procedures. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations have yet to be proven in court.

The arrest has renewed public attention on accountability, charitable donations and the management of public funds in Sri Lanka. Authorities are under pressure to establish what happened to the money and determine whether anyone violated financial regulations.

The outcome could have wider implications for public confidence in charitable organisations and anti-corruption enforcement. As proceedings continue, the focus remains on transparent investigations, credible evidence and ensuring that donations intended to improve children's healthcare reach their intended beneficiaries.
