Wednesday, December 05, 2012 - Drama unraveled at Mombasa’s Shimo la Tewa Prisons after an
inmate attempted committing suicide using broken pieces of tiles. The inmate
had applied human waste on his body to stop wardens from rescuing him.
He was however not happy with the way
the appeal was going since it was not favoring him; after he arrived from the
court he applied human waste all over his body and climbed to the roof top of
the prison.
Efforts to rescue him were barred by
the smell of human waste on him. He was however violent and even injured all
the warders who tried rescuing him.
The incident went on and on as the
inmate cut himself with the pieces of tile on his hands and body for about 7
hours until some two warders risked their lives and managed to bring him to
safety.
The officers were severely injured by
the inmate who had destroyed at least 20 tiles. He was then taken to the
prison’s dispensary for treatment.
After the rescue mission, he wept and
said that the court was not fair and all he wanted was to end his life.
