Must Nairobi University students always be petty?

Monday, March 05, 2012 - If you were driving to church early on Sunday morning along Chiromo-Riverside Drive whistling –kumbaya- a corruption of Come By Us and also unknown to you was a situation you were headed towards. You must have come across a rowdy crowd that had erected road blocks and ready to hurl the massive rocks under each palm. 

Do you always wonder how Kenya has never had an Olympian shot put winner.

Well those thugs happen to be our esteemed leaders of tomorrow - we are always reminded - and Nairobi University students who were rioting over persistent power outages in the area, motorists who had left their homes probably without power ended up being harassed and robbed of their ‘monthly tithe’ over power outage.

“My car was badly damaged when I tried to drive past the roadblock on seeing a crowd running towards where I had stopped,” said a female motorist harassed by the students.

The students’ - future doctors, nurses, architects and others – who are deeply troubled by the persistent power blackouts experienced in Kileleshwa area decided the best way to get rid of the problem was to break a number of windscreens and while at it steal a couple of wallets and handbags.

Nairobi Provincial Police boss Antony Kibuchi denounced the early morning incident and urged the students to maintain peace and above all use the right channels to air their grievances.

“It is wrong for them to attack innocent people. They could even attack their own parents, relatives and friends using the affected road, which will be embarrassing,” said Kibuchi.

The inconsiderate students have all manner of reasons as to why the riot was reasonable and was their last resort.

These sam students forgot to thank the motorists for being their victims after the Kenya Power restored power.
